Everything is coming along nicely for the big day... you've hired the venue, sorted the caterers, you've booked your wedding band... but if there's one thing that leaves many couples weak at the knees (apart from their gorgeous new Spouse, of course) is the thought of doing the all important First Dance.
How do you choose a song that reflects you as a couple without being cheesey? A song with lyrics that are really meaningful to your relationship, without it being the 'same as everyone else'? It's a minefield that's for sure!
So we're here to impart our wedding wisdom and hopefully shed some light on a few pointers that we hope will help you decide on that special song...
1. Choose something romantic.
Ok, that sounds a little obvious, but you'd be amazed at some of the choices we've heard in the past! Remember, the first dance is about sharing that special moment as a couple and allowing your nearest and dearest to witness the intimacy between you and your new Bride or Groom.
2. Choose a song that's meaningful to you both.
There are an awful lot of romantic songs out there, so it's important to choose one that means something to you. Perhaps the lyrics remind you of your relationship, or it was the song that was always on the radio when you first fell in love. Whatever the reason, really listen to the song!
3. Don't be afraid to have fun!
Surprise First Dances are no longer a novelty, but a regular appearance at many fun-loving couples' wedding day. Some argue that this is a little overdone, but we love them! There's nothing quite like seeing the bride busting out some hip hop moves, or the groom doing the worm to really kick off married life!
Check out Cosmopolitan's 'Top 10 Best Viral Wedding Dances' for some real fun-spiration!
4. Popular vs. Alternative
Many couples feel pressured to choose a slightly more obscure song, which is great! But we honestly feel that you shouldn't feel like you can't choose your favourite song just because it's been at the top of the charts for the last 10 weeks! Spotify's 'Top 10 Songs for the First Dance' has some absolute corkers in there (many of which we have performed) and just because likely many other couples have chosen it, doesn't mean you can't too!
5. Get your wedding band to perform it!
Now we may be a little biased here, but in our humble opinion, there's nothing quite like a live performance of your first dance. It really does add that extra special something to the moment and makes the whole thing feel a lot more personal, knowing that your band has put hours of rehearsal into that one song especially for you!
We recently performed at the beautiful Silchester House in Berkshire and the newly-weds chose 'The Book of Love' by Peter Gabriel - such a gorgeous song. Here is Chris singing his beautiful rendition of it...
Above all, ENJOY IT! It's such a special moment, and normally one that really kicks the party off, so enjoy the moment!
Until next time, folks... The Magic Tones x
